UAE Residence Visa Renewal Checklist (2026): Steps and Documents

A simple checklist for renewing your UAE residence visa: when to start, documents, medical test, Emirates ID, insurance and how to avoid late fines in 2026.

Your UAE residence visa is the key to your life here. It lets you work, rent a home, open a bank account and sponsor your family. When it is close to expiry, renewing it on time keeps everything running smoothly.

This checklist walks you through the usual renewal steps, the documents you need, and simple ways to avoid fines.

When should you start?

Start early. A good rule is to begin about 30 to 60 days before your visa expires. This gives time for the medical test, insurance and any document fixes.

If your visa has already expired, do not panic. A grace period usually applies, and its length depends on your visa category. After that, overstay fines can build up, often estimated at about AED 50 per day. We confirm the current rules for your case.

Who handles the renewal?

  • Employment visa: your employer usually starts the renewal, including the MOHRE work permit and labour contract.
  • Family visa: you, as the sponsor, renew your spouse, children or parents. Your own visa usually needs to be valid first.
  • Domestic worker visa: the family sponsor renews through a licensed Tadbeer centre.
  • Investor or other categories: the process depends on your licence or category.

Your renewal checklist

Use this list to get ready. Not every item applies to everyone.

Documents

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months (renew your passport first if needed)
  • Current residence visa and Emirates ID copies
  • Recent passport-size photo with a white background
  • Valid health insurance policy
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai) for family sponsors
  • Salary certificate or labour contract for family sponsors
  • Attested marriage or birth certificates, if requested

Steps

  • Renew or confirm your health insurance
  • Complete the medical fitness test, including TB screening
  • Submit the renewal application (typing)
  • Renew your Emirates ID and attend biometrics if asked
  • Receive your renewed residence, usually shown digitally on your Emirates ID

The renewal steps explained

1. Health insurance

Health insurance is required in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and is a common requirement elsewhere. Make sure your policy is valid before you apply. Some employers include it; family sponsors usually arrange it themselves.

2. Medical fitness test

Most residents aged 18 and over need a medical fitness test at renewal. It usually includes a chest X-ray for TB screening and a blood test. Results are sent to the authorities electronically.

3. Renewal application

The renewal application is submitted through ICP, or GDRFA in Dubai. For employment visas, MOHRE steps also apply. A typing service can prepare and submit this for you.

4. Emirates ID renewal

Your Emirates ID is renewed with your residence. If biometrics are needed, you will get an appointment. Note that late Emirates ID renewal can carry a fine, estimated at about AED 20 per day after a 30-day grace period, up to a maximum of about AED 1,000.

5. Validity

Residence visas are commonly issued for 1 to 2 years, depending on your category. Some categories, such as golden visas, follow different rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the last week. Medical results or insurance can take longer than you expect.
  • An expiring passport. Renew your passport first, or the visa may only match its validity.
  • Expired tenancy. Family sponsors need a valid, registered tenancy contract.
  • Name mismatches. Make sure your name is the same on all documents.
  • Forgetting family members. Renew dependants on time, too.

What if you are outside the UAE?

Renewal rules for residents who are abroad can differ. Some steps, like the medical test and biometrics, usually need you to be in the UAE. Long absences can also affect your residence. If you are outside the country, contact us before your visa expires so we can explain your options.
