Parents Visa UAE: Requirements and Documents (2026 Guide)

Want to sponsor your mother and father in the UAE? Learn the usual parents visa requirements, documents, income rules and steps, explained in plain English.

Many expats dream of having their parents close by. The UAE allows residents to sponsor their mother and father on a residence visa, so they can live with you, see the grandchildren grow up, and get care when they need it.

The rules for parents are stricter than for a spouse or children. This guide explains the usual requirements, the documents you need, and how the process works.

Who can sponsor parents?

In general, a UAE resident can sponsor their parents if they meet the conditions set by the authorities. These are the common points:

  • You hold a valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  • You meet the income condition. Sources differ on the exact figure and how it is calculated, so we confirm the current rule for your case.
  • You have suitable housing for your family, usually a tenancy contract or title deed in your name.
  • You can provide health insurance for each parent.

Both men and women can sponsor parents, as long as they meet the conditions.

Both parents together

A key rule is that parents are usually sponsored together. If you apply for your mother, the authorities generally expect you to apply for your father too.

There are exceptions. If one parent has passed away, or your parents are divorced, you can usually sponsor one parent alone. In that case you will need supporting proof, such as a death certificate or divorce certificate. We check which documents apply to your situation.

Documents you will usually need

Every case is a little different, but most parents visa applications need:

  • Passport copies of the sponsor and both parents (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Passport-size photos of each parent with a white background
  • Your Emirates ID and residence visa copy
  • Attested birth certificate of the sponsor, to prove the parent-child link (kinship)
  • Salary certificate or labour contract, plus recent bank statements
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai) or title deed, and a recent utility bill
  • Health insurance for each parent
  • Consulate affidavit or undertaking, which may be required in some emirates or cases

Foreign documents, such as a birth certificate issued abroad, usually need attestation. That means attestation in the home country, then by the UAE embassy there, and then by MOFA in the UAE. If the document is not in Arabic or English, a legal Arabic translation may also be needed.

The process, step by step

Here is how a parents visa usually moves:

  1. Eligibility check. Confirm your income, housing and documents meet the current rules.
  2. Entry permit application. If your parents are outside the UAE, an entry permit is submitted through ICP (or GDRFA in Dubai).
  3. Travel and entry. Once approved, your parents travel to the UAE on the entry permit.
  4. Medical fitness test. Each parent completes a medical test at an approved centre.
  5. Emirates ID biometrics. Your parents attend a biometrics appointment.
  6. Residence visa issued. The residence is issued, usually linked to the Emirates ID.

If your parents are already in the UAE on a visit visa, a change of status may be possible. We confirm whether this is allowed for your case.

Validity and renewal

A parents residence visa is commonly issued for one year at a time, and then renewed. Renewal usually needs updated income proof, tenancy, insurance and a new medical test. We confirm the current validity when you apply.

Common reasons for delays

Most delays come from paperwork, not from the application itself. Watch out for:

  • Birth certificate not attested, or the name spelling does not match the passport
  • Tenancy contract expired or not registered
  • Income proof that does not clearly meet the condition
  • Health insurance not in place before the medical stage
  • Missing affidavit or supporting certificate when sponsoring one parent

Fixing these early saves weeks.

Tips for a smooth application

  • Start the attestation of your birth certificate early. It is often the slowest part.
  • Keep names the same across all documents.
  • Choose a health insurance plan suitable for older adults.
  • Plan your parents' travel after the entry permit is approved, not before.
